Description

The Renault-Gordini EF1 was the first turbocharged engine in Formula One and made its competitive debut powering the marque’s first foray into the sport, the Renault RS01, at the British Grand Prix of 1977 in the hands of Jean-Pierre Jabouille. Despite its notorious unreliability, it was powerful enough to make others sit up and take notice, with Ferrari debuting their own V6 turbocharged engine in practice for the 1980 Italian Grand Prix. Other marques soon followed suit and by 1984 only Tyrrell raced with naturally-aspirated engines.

Zenit-E, unknown M42 lens. Fujichrome 35mm slide film, unknown film speed.
